Math Counts
Elementary & Middle

Math Counts has been a tradition in Onslow County Schools for years.  In 2012, we were excited to roll out our first local Elementary version of Math Counts.  Elementary only competes within Onslow County. Middle School Math Counts is part of the larger, nation-wide Math Counts Competition. Click the button below for more information from the national Math Counts web-site.

Using Kahoot! for Math Counts Ciphering

January 5, 2017: The final round at Math Counts is referred to as "Ciphering" or "Countdown."  At our local Onslow County event for both elementary and middle school Math Counts, we will be using Kahoot!.  Kahoot gives points for correct answers, but also participants earn more points based on how quickly they answer.  So, the first correct answer earns more points than the next correct answer.  Each team will have their four players come to the front of the room one at a time to participate in the Countdown Round.  This is a new process for middle school, but this is the same as we did last year for elementary.  Students should expect to use the trackpad on the laptop and not a mouse.
Please watch the video to the right for a quick overview of what this will look like.  We encourage coaches to practice Kahoot with students if it is not already being used in class.  Laptops will be provided for this round.

Elementary Math Counts

April 17, 2017: Good afternoon Elementary Math Counts Coaches and Contacts,
Welcome back!  We are rapidly approaching our May 4th Elementary Math Counts Event.  We look forward to seeing so many schools at this year's event.
The biggest "To-Do" at this point is to be sure to submit your player names using our form.  This will allow us to make a program and to be sure we know exactly who is coming.
Link to Enter Player Names (please complete by Monday, April 24): https://forms.office.com/Pages/ResponsePage.aspx?id=2oj0MM90xkqfNEBYMyDapDtJKYsNMJ9DroA-9V1iFqZUMFAyMlZBNkNJRjczSEVBUlY0VERZUlAwTC4u
  • JCE, DE, PWE, STS, CFIE, QCE, HCE, SDE, and IOP are already entered. If you'd like to double check your kids or spellings, I have attached the current spreadsheet here.
Each of our previous messages are on this website in case you want to review any of the "to-dos" including arranging buses, the rounds, how we use Kahoot, number of players, etc.

If your school is no longer planning on participating, I will need to know that as soon as possible as well.  We will be printing materials next week.

December 9, 2016 Email:
Good afternoon Elementary Math Counts team,

In many ways, our May 4th Elementary Math Counts date seems so far off in the distance, but then again December seemed a long way off not too long ago.  So, this is just a quick update and check in regarding Elementary Math Counts.  Below you will see a list of all the schools that are participating this year and you as the amazing coach.  We have now submitted for your coaching stipend. It is not nearly enough for all the work you do, but it is a token of our appreciation.  This stipend cannot be paid until after the event, so you will likely see that in a check in June.
If you would like to see some video from last year’s Elementary Math Counts visit https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SPoLLQnICSw&t=34s (Jump to about the 17 minute point)

What is on the horizon?
  1. We will be in touch in late January or early February to ask you for your team member names.
  2. Elementary Math Counts: May 4, 2017 (at Clyde Erwin Elementary)
  3. You will want to set up a bus or transportation as early as possible.  Please work with the person on your campus who arranges for transportation (this is likely your assistant principal).  In many cases, your school may want to share a bus with another school.  We plan to begin announcements by 8:45am and the competition by 9:00am.  We wrap up as close to 1:00pm as possible.
  4. Due to space, we ask that you do not bring alternates. If you need to plan to bring one, you can do that, but please let that child know that he/she may have to sit on the floor as we may not have enough tables to accommodate all the alternates.
5)      For the ciphering/countdown round, we plan to use Kahoot with district supplied laptops (no mice). You can create you own Kahoot at https://create.kahoot.it kids can login to your Kahoot at https://kahoot.it
6)      Please remember to bring your own calculators (kids can use them for the application and team rounds)- whatever calculator they are comfortable with using is fine to bring
7)      Know if any of your children have medical concerns or food allergies
a.       Have parent contact information for each participant
 In preparation for the event:
  • If you would like to see some video from last year’s Elementary Math Counts visit https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SPoLLQnICSw&t=34s (Jump to about the 17 minute point)
  • Help your team understand the flow of the day (the types of rounds, working as a team as well as individually, and problem solving)
    • Sprint Round- Individual Assessment (30-40 minutes)
    • Application/Modeling Round- Team oriented- problem solving- likely 10 or so questions (30 minutes)
    • Team Round (similar to the application round, but planned to be 2 questions at a time with a limited amount of time per question)
    • Ciphering (most likely using Kahoot)
  • Make sure team members know that the first and last round is individual play and the middle rounds require good teamwork
    • For team play, help them find ways to indicated to team members that they really know an answer or are not sure (other than shouting it out J)
  • Let your students know that we are providing pizza and juice for lunch, but they are welcome to bring something else if they prefer. We also plan to have a snack of cookies and juice.
Role of the Coach On the Day of the Event:
  • Making sure your students know where to sit and helping during transitions
  • Helping hand out test materials
  • Assisting with monitoring that students are doing their own work (or their team is doing its own work)
  • Keeping the atmosphere both fun and focused (that is a challenge, but we can do it J)
  • Getting to know the other coaches
  • Your coach stipend has been submitted to finance and is scheduled to pay with your May or June paycheck.  This stipend is not even close to compensating you for your time in selecting a team, coaching them, coming with them to the event, and all the other pieces that you

  • We are looking to see if we can find substitute funds for you for the day of the event.  I will let you know when we know more about this funding.
  • Resources for Coaching:
    • One of the best things you can do with the kids is to give them a problem or set of 4 problems to work on together. What many coaches find is that kids do not know how to work together on solving problems or knowing who is good at what types of problems. Math Problem of the Day websites are great places to find some simple and some more complex tasks
      (http://www.mathopolis.com/questions/day.php,
      http://www.risd.k12.nm.us/potd/,
https://www.mathcounts.org/resources/problem-of-the-week (may be a bit much- this is more for middle school),
      http://www.nctm.org/Classroom-Resources/Problems/.
The other part is to make sure you and the kids understand the rounds.
That information is on our Math Counts Website (I think) http://academicinnovation.weebly.com/math-counts.html

Coaches' Note for the Event

Thank you for your active role in coaching middle school Math Counts and more importantly in advocating for Excellence in Mathematics! In the folder you will receive at our event are your student certificates (and one for you J).  If there are any errors, please let me know and we will gladly make a new one.

Regional Math Counts: Saturday, February 11th
The February 11th Math Counts event is the Regional “Official” event.  We take one bus to the event. Parents are welcome to follow the bus, but during the testing there is very little to see.  For coaches, I recommend bringing some other work to do (it can be good catch up time).  The district has arranged and paid for the bus.
  • The bus will be at the Central Office (200 Broadhurst Road) by 7:00am.
  • Please meet your team and the bus in the parking lot at the county office at no later than 7:15 AM
  • We will pick up Dixon Middle on our way at approximately 7:40 AM
  • The event is at Cape Fear Community College- McKeithan Center (4500 Blue Clay Road Castly Hayne, NC  28429)
  • Kids and coaches will receive shirts when they arrive
  • Bring your photo release form signed for each child (a copy is in this folder)

Good afternoon,

Seeing Bryan McCabe's message (copied below) was a reminder that we need a little information for our local event as well.  Really all we need are your student names. To make this as quick as possible, I have set up a Form for you to complete.  So that we can have programs printed, could you please fill in your player names by next Thursday, January 26th. I will plan to make programs on Friday.

Enter Student Names for OCS Event: https://forms.office.com/Pages/ResponsePage.aspx?id=2oj0MM90xkqfNEBYMyDapDtJKYsNMJ9DroA-9V1iFqZUREw3SlBWQTNNSkZFN1FMQUFVSEs1OTBGNy4u

Remember all information is on our website as well with any past messages (I know I need lots of reminders about details) at http://academicinnovation.weebly.com/math-counts.html .

Bryan's Message:
Coaches:

Thank you for volunteering your time, and for your continued interest in the Mathcounts Competition.  It takes a lot of volunteers to make this happen, and obviously your roles are instrumental!

There are 21 teams registered to take part in our competition this year.
I have already ordered the test material and the trophies.
The CFCC McKeithan Center has been reserved.

If you did not already know, the date for the PENC Southeastern Chapter 2017 Mathcounts competition is set for Saturday, February 11, 2017 @ the McKeithan Center on CFCC North Campus (4500 Blue Clay Road, Castle Hayne, NC 28429).

Please have each Mathlete’s Parent complete the attached release (CLICK HERE FOR PHOTO RELEASE FORM), and bring those to the competition, or email scanned copies to me sooner.

Please take a moment to review the attached worksheet (CLICK HERE FOR SPREADSHEET) and verify I have the correct information for your team.  Please find the work sheet for your team and update your team’s information on the attached spreadsheet and return it asap (student information, tee color, and sizes).  Because I need to order tee shirts this week, I need your team’s information no later than Friday.  If you are not good with excel, then just email me the names, shirt sizes, and preferred color to me.  I can order a tee shirt for up to 2 coaches, and one for each Mathlete that was registered.  Please only include information for the # of competitors registered (4 per team and 1 per individual).

Regarding tee shirt colors.  Available colors are in the links below.  It was suggested to google the Gildan and the Color you like to get a better feel for the actual color, as opposed to what they look like in the link.    Example “Gildan, Kelly Green”

Good morning middle school Math Counts coaches,

Where has the time gone?

Thank you for filling out the Math Counts spreadsheet earlier this year for your school.  We are currently in the process of mailing in your registrations and paying for each school.  If we need anything additionally from you, we will be in touch very soon.

Just so you know, these registrations are due by December 16 to avoid the late fee and no registrations are taken after December 31st.  The district will pay for one team per school. You can register more than one team for the regional event, but we are only able to pay for one team.

Once Math Counts receives this information, you will receive more information and materials from Math Counts.  We will be submitting for a stipend for the lead coach from each school.  You do not need to do any paperwork for this. We will handle the paperwork side of things.

When and where will we be participating in Math Counts?
  • Our local competition will be at Clyde Erwin Elementary on Thursday, February 2 (typically we try to register at 8:30 and start by 9:00am).
  • The regional event will be held at Cape Fear Community College Cape Fear McKiethan Center.  We will arrange for a bus to transport teams and coaches to this event as we have the last few years.

How Does It Work?
The Competition Series has 4 levels of competition—school, chapter, state and national. Each level of competition is comprised of 4 rounds—Sprint, Target, Team and Countdown Round.
  • Sprint Round: focuses on speed and accuracy. Students have 40 minutes to complete 30 math problems without a calculator.
  • Target Round: focuses on problem-solving and mathematical reasoning. Students receive 4 pairs of problems and have 6 minutes to complete each pair, assuming the use of a calculator.
  • Team Round: focuses on problem-solving and collaboration. Students have 20 minutes to complete 10 math problems, assuming the use of a calculator.
  • Countdown Round: focuses on speed and accuracy. Students have a maximum of 60 seconds (at our local round) per problem without a calculator.

March Math Counts Update

It was great to see so many of you at the Elementary Math Counts Coaches’ meeting on March 10th.  We certainly understand that every coach was not able to attend.

Here is the brief PowerPoint overview that we reviewed.

Please note:
  1. Due to space, we ask that you do not bring alternates. If you need to plan to bring one, you can do that, but please let that child know that he/she may have to sit on the floor as we may not have enough tables to accommodate all the alternates.
  2. The schedule for the day is in the PowerPoint.  We will plan to begin by 9:00am and wrap up around 1:00pm.
  3. We are at Clyde Erwin Elementary in the multi-purpose room
  4. For the ciphering/countdown round, we will either use clickers or Kahoot. If we are able to use Kahoot, the district will supply the tablets for students to use. However, practicing with Kahoot will definitely help kids.  You can create you own Kahoot at https://create.kahoot.it kids can login to your Kahoot at https://kahoot.it
  5. Please remember to bring your own calculators (kids can use them for the application and team rounds)- whatever calculator they are comfortable with using is fine to bring
  6. Know if any of your children have medical concerns or food allergies
    1. Have parent contact information for each participant

Resources for Coaching:
One of the best things you can do with the kids is to give them a problem or set of 4 problems to work on together. What many coaches find is that kids do not know how to work together on solving problems or knowing who is good at what types of problems. Math Problem of the Day websites are great places to find some simple and some more complex tasks

The other part is to make sure you and the kids understand the rounds.
That information is on our Math Counts Website (I think) http://academicinnovation.weebly.com/math-counts.html

February Elementary Math Counts Update

Good morning Elementary Math Counts Coaches,
We have been working hard to put together what we think will be both a fun and challenging day for your kids.  We know you have been working hard with your teams and with all your students.
In order for us to put together a program, please enter your student’s names at http://bit.ly/mathcountselem by Monday, March 7, 2016.
Elementary Math Counts will be held at Clyde Erwin Elementary Magnet School on Wednesday, May 5, 2016.  We will plan to begin with introductions and an overview at 8:45 with our first round starting about 9:00am.  We will provide a morning snack (cookies and juice) and lunch (Pizza, juice box, and a cookie).

Teams should be comprised of four members. If you would like to bring one alternate, you may do that, but we may not have a table for alternates.  Alternates may simply be given a clipboard and a seat along the side of the room. With 20 teams, we will be a little tighter than we have been in the past.  Alternates will have a chance to take the tests and participate, but their work may not scored.  They will not have a chance to participate it the countdown/ciphering round however.  The team members must remain the same during the full day (alternates cannot rotate in and out).
Some things to remember:
  • Make sure you or your school has lined up transportation to and from the event
    • Remember we are at Clyde Erwin Elementary
    • We plan to begin at 8:45 and end around 1:00 or 1:30
In preparation for the event:
  • Help your team understand the flow of the day (the types of rounds, working as a team as well as individually, and problem solving)
  • Assisting with monitoring that students are doing their own work (or their team is doing its own work)
  • Possibly running the clicker for your team during the ciphering round
  • Keeping the atmosphere both fun and focused (that is a challenge, but we can do it J)
  • Getting to know the other coaches
  • Understand that things usually run pretty smoothly, but we are experimenting with a couple new ideas this year, so please understand if there are some minor hiccups
Your coach stipend has been submitted to finance and is scheduled to pay with your May paycheck.  This $200 stipend is not even close to compensating you for your time in selecting a team, coaching them, coming with them to the event, and all the other pieces that you
We are looking to see if we can find substitute funds for you for the day of the event.  I will let you know when we know more about this funding.
 Rounds:
  • Sprint Round- Individual Assessment (30-40 minutes)
  • Application/Modeling Round- Team oriented- problem solving- likely 10 or so questions (30 minutes)
  • Team Round (similar to the application round, but planned to be 2 questions at a time with a limited amount of time per question)
  • Ciphering (possibly using Kahoot, probably using clickers)
Coaches’ Meeting: Since we have many new teams this year and new coaches as well as some new twists on the rounds  for the event, I would really like to have a face-to-face coaches’ meeting soon. However, afternoon schedules are not cooperating right now.  So, please email your questions and we will get together in March.
We will schedule a meeting for March 10th at 3:30pm in Meeting Room 2.  I will send coaches a calendar invitation as well.

September Elementary Math Counts Update

We hope this has been an outstanding start to the school year for each of you.  As schools begin to get all their academic enrichment teams together, one of the newer events and most exciting events is Elementary Math Counts.  This event is home-grown and is a direct result of the success of Middle School Math Counts.
As we get started this year, please view the Elementary Math Counts video below (or click here to view on YouTube).

If you would like to download a copy of the PowerPoint shared in the YouTube Video, here is a link to that information: September 2015 Elementary Math Counts Overview.

Please be sure to email Michael Elder that you and your school are participating by September 30th. This will also make you eligible for the coach stipend.

Middle School Math Counts

January 2016 Middle School Math Counts Update

Coaches, an email update was sent on January 5th with the following information.  It is time to get excited about Math Counts!

Coaches for Dixon Middle, Northwoods Park Middle, Southwest Middle, and Swansboro Middle, please visit click here to add your player names for Middle School Math Counts (it is best to use Google Chrome or Safari).  Please scroll down to line 11 where you will find your school name in a column with places to type in your player names.  Please check for spelling as these may be used in the program.  Please do this no later than Monday, January 11th as we will be preparing the program and getting that printed.

This year, as we did last year, we are asking you to serve as “test monitors” during the day. We just ask that you circulate through the room to help with broken pencils and to discourage any answer sharing.

New for this year, we are asking each coach to be the Ciphering Round clicker holder.  This means you will receive the answer from your student during the ciphering round and click the clicker to let us know when the student is complete.

We will provide pizza, chips, and juice for lunch for students and coaches.  If you have any students who would prefer to bring lunch, he/she is welcome to do that as well.

You are responsible for arranging for transportation to this district event for February 2nd, however, we will arrange for a bus to take you and your kids to the regional event on February 13th at Cape Fear.  If you have not arranged for a bus yet, you will need to do that very soon.

Click Here for the Math Counts Day's Schedule: February 2, 2016 at Clyde Erwin
November 2015 Middle School Math Counts Update

Coaches, please visit click here to add your player names for Middle School Math Counts (it is best to use Google Chrome or Safari).  Please scroll down to line 11 where you will find your school name in a column with places to type in your player names.  Please check for spelling as these may be used in the program

It has come to our attention that the date for our local Math Counts competition (Tuesday, February 2nd) may be in conflict with Beta Club inductions for at least one school. Please let Michael Elder know as soon as possible if there is a conflict for your school.

The regional competition is tentatively set for Saturday, February 13th at Cape Fear Community College in Pender County as it has been in the past. I am working to communicate with their volunteer staff to make sure we are all registered and good to go. We will plan on taking a bus as we did last year (meet at the county office and pick up Dixon along the way).

October 2015 Middle School Math Counts Update
Just a couple things that I would have shared if we were together today (but these are just as easy to share over email).

  1. Click Here for The Math Counts Coach/School Handbook
  2. Once we get your team registered (we will be submitting for payment this week).  That usually takes a couple weeks to process the check, but then you should be able to set up your account online (or use last year’s account information) at https://www.mathcounts.org/get-started-0
  3. Math Counts Trainer App/Website:  I believe this is new and looks like it could be an interesting way to practice for Math Counts:  http://artofproblemsolving.com/mathcounts_trainer
  4. Have fun with the kids and if there is something we can do to help, just let me know J
It is hard to believe that it is time to start talking about Middle School Math Counts! This is truly one of the highlights of the year and it only happens due to the dedication of our Math Counts Coaches.  As we get started this year, please view the Middle School Math Counts video below (or click here to view on YouTube).
If you would like to download a copy of the PowerPoint shared in the YouTube Video, here is a link to that information: September 2015 Math Counts Overview.

Please be sure to enter your information to register your team (and to be eligible for the coach stipend at http://bit.ly/middlemathcounts by September 30,

May 1, 2015 was an amazing day for Onslow County Elementary Math Counts.  Fifteen elementary schools showed their stuff mathematically.  This group exemplified the 8 math practices, especially persevering and problem solving.  Showing both individual and team strengths, we could not be more proud of our kids.  We say a special thank you to all the coaches who gave of themselves to make sure their kids had a leader.  Thank you to principals for coming today to cheer on your kids and to Central Services staff for making the day possible.

Teams were very evenly matched with a number of awards being spread across many schools.  Awards went to the following:
Overall Team:
1st Place: Carolina Forest International
2nd Place: Stateside Elementary
3rd Place: Summersill Elementary

Team Ciphering Award:
1st Place: Morton Elementary
2nd Place: Blue Creek Elementary
3rd Place: Silverdale Elementary

Individual Award:
1st Place: Thomas from Silverdale Elementary
2nd Place: Jacob from Carolina Forest Elementary
3rd Place: Anthony from Morton Elementary

Onslow county Elementary Math Counts Registration

Elementary Math Counts will be held at Clyde Erwin Elementary Magnet School on Friday, May 1, 2015.  Elementary Coaches should enter student names on the form below by Friday, March 6, 2015. If you have already entered names, you do not need to do this again. This way we can plan for how many teams.

Right now, teams should be comprised of four members. It appears that there will be room for teams to bring 1-2 alternates to also attend.  These students will have a chance to take the tests and participate, but their work may not scored.  They will not have a chance to participate it the countdown/ciphering round however.  The team members must remain the same during the full day (alternates cannot rotate in and out).

Student Names Entry

Once your Math Counts Team is established, please enter your students' names either through this link http://bit.ly/mathcountsnames1415.  Please be sure to enter your names by Friday, March 6th. This will be our way of knowing that your school is participating.

Middle School Math Counts

Email February 5, 2015:
For Saturday, February 28, our bus is reserved and will be waiting at the Central Office for you to ride.  The bus will also make a stop at Dixon Middle School to pick up those students on the way. The bus plans to arrive at the Central Office at 6:45am and to leave the central office around 7:00 (no later than 7:10am).  Dr. Eason's office has made arrangements to pay for the bus. We will need to be sure that we can fit everyone on the bus.  The bus can comfortably hold 50 people. So, with 4 team members plus a coach that puts us at 40.

Here is where I need your help...Are alternates allowed to go to regionals?  If they are we might be a little over capacity.  However, it seems to me that alternates do not go to regionals can you help?

January 27 Email Update to Middle School Coaches

It is hard to believe that we are just over a week away from Middle School Math Counts on Thursday, February 5th.  I am sure there will still be questions after this update, and please share them. It is hard to do all this without meeting, but I hope by not meeting we have saved and honored a little more of your time.

·         We are trying to streamline the schedule for Middle School Math Counts, so bear with us if we get a little off time.  However, some of you had shared that you would like a little less down time during the event, so we are working to make that happen. Please see the Day Schedule attached.  You are welcome to arrive before 8:45 at Clyde Erwin Elementary, but know that they have a morning activity going on then, so you may have to wait in the hall.  The kids are welcome to do a warm up activity or rest until 9:00 when we kick things off.
·         We are trying to mindful of the number of volunteers used, so this year, we are going to ask each of you to walk the floor and monitor during the studnets’ testing.  We may find that we do not need all of you walking all the time, but let’s play that by ear.
·         We will be providing a pizza lunch and cookies for a morning snack.  If someone would prefer to bring their lunch, they are certainly welcome to do that as well.
·         Parents are welcome for the day or to come around lunch for the ciphering/countdown round and awards. We will just ask that they sit at the edge of the room.
·         Edie Marshburn from Dr. Eason’s office and Pam Brewer from our office are working on the paperwork for your coaching stipends.
·         I have a photo release form that we are being asked to share with each of you. Most of your kids have a photo release on file, but I guess this is to double check for an event like this. I will ask Pam to email this to you.
·         It appears that I have confused somethings based on the information on the Math Counts Website.  I do truly apologize.  Our regional event is the SouthEastern Region on February 28th, not the date I shared earlier. Edie Marshburn is checking to see if Dr. Eason’s office can pay for a shared bus to maybe take that off your school’s budget.  She is not sure about that yet. So, please plan on February 28th not the earlier date I had shared.  Thank you to Caitrin and each of you who helped by sharing the confirmation you got from Bryan McCabe. I need to get on their email list. {Clovene, I see he has your name spelled incorrectly, so you may not have received a confirmation email from him}
2015 PENC Southeastern Chapter Regional MathCounts Competition

Saturday, February 18, 2015 February 28, 2015

Cape Fear Community College North Campus (McKeithan Center)
Most important to us is that the kids have a good day and a nice warm up experience getting ready for regionals.  Things are never perfect, but we will do all we can to make the time great.  Winning the trophies is nice, but it is definitely not the main goal.  After the event, we will be sending you a survey to give us feedback on what you liked about this year’s approach and what you would like to see changed for next year.
